Lamination adds a 1.5 Mil thick plastic film via a heat process to the poster.  This is similar to the lamination on an ID card, only not as thick.  Lamination adds a layer of protection as well as increasing the saturation of the colors.  It's a great alternative to traditional glossy photographic prints.
